Class Descriptions
All classes taught at Creating Space Yoga Studio are Hatha Yoga inspired by the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli. We teach through asana (postures) and pranayama (breath) that we have the potential to open and change. Through yoga we can learn to "undo" tension so that the body is better to receive and to experience stillness and wholeness. We approach our yoga practice as an evolution; understanding that there are always beginnings and no endings. Our teachers believe that getting into the pose is not a final goal; the achievement is in the work itself.
Beginning:
These classes are for students with little or no experience. These classes will include simple movements to stretch and warm-up the body. An introduction into the beginner asanas (postures) as well as simple pranayama (breath control) will be taught. Also suitable for pre-natal students. Modifications will be provided.
Intermediate:
These classes are for students with a familiarity of the basic yoga poses and who are looking to expand their knowledge of asanas and pranayama by learning more advanced poses.
Experienced:
These students show an understanding of the yoga poses and pranayama and have become curious to understand what is meant by the "pose behind the pose". These classes give the student the opportunity to move deeper into their yoga practice.
Slow Flow:
This slow flow class is about moving seamlessly from one posture to another while taking the time to experience the movement, the breath and the fluidity of each posture. An understanding of the basic yoga postures is recommended. This class would be of interest to advanced beginning and intermediate students.
Gentle Yoga:
This yoga class is designed to help relieve stiffness and tension due to injury or age. This class will guide each student through gentle and small movements leading to simple asanas (yoga poses). Yoga benefits all bodies, all ages, all abilities.
Way To Go Deeper:
These classes are designed for students who have worked with Helen and have come to a place of inquiry about their personal yoga. We ask permission to work intimately and confidentially within this small group. There is a maximum of 8 students per class and the classes are once every three weeks on Thursday afternoon.
Yoga and Mindfulness:
This is the perfect class after a busy day. A yoga class with a slower pace paying particular attention to the mindfulness of each asana/posture. Time will be spent releasing any holding and tension in the body through movement followed by a pranayama practice (breathing), a sitting mediation or a restorative shivasana. This class will be appropriate for all levels of students.
Restorative Yoga:
This restorative yoga class will focus on relaxing the body in postures supported by the use of props and blankets to allow the body the opportunity to rest, renew and to heal. A perfect class for everybody especially those dealing with chronic stress, fatigue or recovering from illness, injury or significant life changes.
Yoga for Better Bones:
A yoga class designed for the prevention and management of low bone density or osteoporosis. This class will teach safe versions of yoga poses as well as include variations to the yoga postures using light hand weights. This will be an active and lively class focusing on proper alignment and posture, balance, flexibility and strengthening.
Yoga Stretch for Men
This class will be geared to men keeping in mind flexibility, strength and stress levels. Different from a gym "stretch" class, yoga will focus on the whole body and not just the muscles. When we strengthen on top of tension, we create an unstable foundation. If we can learn to release tension in the body first, lengthening and strengthening become more functional and will ultimately prevent future injuries. The benefit will be a greater sense of peace and ease in all facets of your life.
Kripalu Hatha
A Kripalu class values both ancient yogic teaching and the wisdom of each practitioner. Kripalu means "compassion" and in keeping with its name approaches the practice with the intention of awareness and self-acceptance. This class will weave fluid movement with breath work and meditation. Gentle posture flows to warm up the body, the sustaining of poses to build strength and flexibility and ending with deep relaxation; we invite the movement of energy.
Yoga for Tweens
Many "tweens" see their parents and older siblings head out to yoga classes but have yet to find a class that is suited to their unique needs. This yoga class is a fun way for a "tween" to learn to deal with stress, anxiety as well as learn safe and fun ways to stretch, lengthen and unwind the body. Yoga can be incorporated into their lives at an early age, then for life!
