Chair Yoga – What Is It?
Chair Yoga is a class of traditional yoga poses adapted so they can be done while sitting in a chair. It is ideal for people who have trouble standing for long periods of time, those who have balance issues, or for those who find it hard to get up and down off the ground. However Chair yoga is beneficial for any student, from beginners to those working at the more advanced levels. Our Chair yoga class is dynamic and challenging, developing greater strength, flexibility and balance for students at all levels. Chair yoga is wonderfully adaptable; our teacher gives several …

You have footprints on your wall You always have a yoga mat in the car You own a neti pot or know what one is You dream of yoga poses Your yoga mat has a permanent place on the floor of your home You know the names Iyengar, Krishnamurti, Vanda Scaravelli, Pattabhi Jois and others You spend as much time in your bare feet in the winter as you do in the summer You own a belt that is not for pants You wonder if you will ever reach “enlightenment” You are aware of your breath You have a …

CSY Community: Introducing Louise Maher
How did you discover yoga and how long have you been practicing? I was living on a typical diet of today’s world ~ sitting behind a desk, working on a computer & sitting in commuter traffic. A “knowing” within and how I felt both physically and mentally, let me know loud & clear that I needed to move. This set me on a mission to find some form of movement and on the way I discovered a copy of Yoga Journal magazine. This looked very appealing. I found a place to participate in yoga classes ~ this was in 1999 …

Proliferation of Pj’s!
As we move through the years and the holidays approach, we usually gravitate towards long lasting traditions and try to hold on to the same yearly events and gatherings. But as we all know, things always change and never stay the same. There is both sadness and freedom in this truth. The shapes of our families change. Kids grow up, people move away or we lose someone that we love. It is hard to envision replicating the same loved traditions with the changing shapes around us. What I have noticed with each greying hair is that traditions are so important …

CSY Community – Introducing Julia Schmidt and Paul Beinschroth
How did you discover yoga? About 5 years ago we both realized that we needed to find a way to balance ourselves and yoga seemed the means to a much needed end. We figured that if it worked for George Harrison then surely it would appeal to us! Years earlier I (Julia) had tried yoga but for me at that time in my life it was not fast enough. I was into the heavy & hard jump around aerobics phase and did not give yoga a fair chance. Thankfully I recognized that this was not a fair assessment and was …

CSY Community: Introducing Sue Tully
How did you discover yoga and how long have you practiced? My yoga journey began with my Mom. I was looking for something that was physically engaging but, as a post graduate student, I also sought an activity that would teach me how to slow my mind down and relax. My Mom had begun her yoga practice a few years before and encouraged me to join her for a session. We began almost 10 years ago and still practice together when we can. How has your yoga practice shaped or affected your life? My yoga practice has become an important …

9 Reasons that Men Love Yoga
Although yoga is often associated with flexible women in expensive yoga gear, I’ve found that men really enjoy it too, once they give it a chance. More and more men are finding that adding yoga into their busy lives helps them reduce aches and pains, sleep better, and perform better in their chosen sports, from hockey and rugby, to golf and running. A quick Google search provides an impressive list of male athletes who do yoga: LeBron James, Shaquille O’Neal, Andy Murray, Pete Sampras, Evander Holyfield, Tim Thomas, Wayne Gretzky, the New Zealand All Blacks, and many Olympians. At …

Walking With My Mom – My Experience As A CSY Walker
Okay, I am letting the “cat out of the bag” (is that the saying?), Karin-Lynn Cumming is my Mom and she is also one of the CSY Walking Group coaches. This is important because I am proud of her. Her story from “couch potato” to “personal trainer” is inspiring and at one time completely out of character and unexpected. (I will include her story on this blog in the near future). It is also important because I know I got the best walking coach that I felt suited the needs of our yoga community and the future health and growth …

Using Yoga To Eliminate Tension In The Jaw, Throat and Face – A Workshop with Cheryl Smith
Most of us know the power of yoga and why its practice can be an important tool to move through life with. Many of us fail to realize that yoga is so much more than what is practiced on our mats and in a yoga class. We hope that we can continue to bring CSY yoga students workshops that reinforce the power of yoga and how it can be applied to everyday challenges. On November 11, 2012 from 10am – 12pm Cheryl Smith will be offering this unique workshop. This is why she finds interest in this topic. “I have …

Breaking It Down Into Moments
“Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment” ~Buddha This is how I see it … 1. we only have the moment and 2. our lives are a series of moments linked together. For me this makes things more simple. It takes the idea of a “mindful life” and allows it to be accessible and something that is “do-able”. A “mindful life” now becomes something tangible. It takes a large challenge (living mindfully) and breaks it up into smaller manageable pieces. When I think of I how I want to live …
