  • Restorative Yoga : The Antidote To Stress

“The antidote to stress is relaxation. To relax is to rest deeply. This rest is different from sleep. Deep states of sleep include periods of dreaming which increase muscular tension, as well as other physiological signs of tension. Relaxation is a state in which there is no movement, no effort, and the brain is quiet. Common to all stress reduction techniques is putting the body in a comfortable position, with gentle attention directed toward the breath. Do these techniques work? Scientists have researched the effects of relaxation and report measurable benefits, including reduction in muscle tension and improved circulation. Restorative …

  • You Start Where You Are…

The summer flew by. The speed at which it moved makes me think that I didn’t find the time I needed this summer to be still, to reflect, and to pause. Although busy, it was filled with good times, socializing with good friends, playing with my kids, a long road trip and time spent at the ocean. It was good, but it flew by.

  • A Few Days Of Solitude

Recently I had the opportunity to spend a few days by myself at a comfy cottage in the woods nestled beside a rustic lake. I know, I know, I am lucky! A few months ago I had a realization that it has been many, many years since I had spent a few days completely alone. When I was 23 and backpacking through Europe, I had a glorious seven days alone in Paris while I awaited the arrival of my boyfriend. SEVEN DAYS ALONE IN PARIS! I can’t even fathom the good fortune of that anymore. Three days alone in the …

  • in perpetual spring

in perpetual spring Gardens are also good places to sulk. You pass beds of spiky voodoo lilies and trip over the roots of a sweet gum tree, in search of medieval plants whose leaves, when they drop off turn into birds if they fall on land, and coloured carp if they plop into water. Suddenly the archetypal human desire for peace with every other species wells up in you. The lion and the lamb cuddling up. The snake and the snail, kissing. Even the prick of the thistle, queen of the weeds, revives your secret belief in perpetual spring, your …

  • Creating Space Yoga In The Oakville Beaver

Our successful Holiday Pajama Drive for the Halton Children’s Aid Society made the local Oakville Beaver this week. We collected in just a couple of weeks, 65 pairs of pajamas for local children in the care of the Children Aid Society. Thinking of the 65 children who were able to open a pair of new cozy pj’s Christmas morning makes the memories of the holidays even more special. It feels so good to give! Thank you to everyone who contributed!   Here is a link to the Oakville Beaver story and photo. http://www.oakvillebeaver.com/news/article/291162

All of the pajama’s collected will be passed on to a deserving local child. There is a particular need for youth sizes (ages 12 -18).   Thanks for helping!

  • I Need A Yoga Retreat

This week I am thinking of my fellow teachers, and students who are all practicing their yoga, enjoying some hiking and feeling a warm breeze on an amazing yoga retreat in Mexico led by Helen Duquette. I, on the other hand, am in Southern Ontario, feeling the temperature drop, raking mounds of leaves, avoiding the flu but thankfully, at the moment I am feeling the warm sun shining through the window as I write. I don’t mean to sound like I am feeling sorry for myself. I am happy for all of them to be there. I am happy to …

  • Dear Helen,

Your “Sound of Yoga” workshop was an uplifting and wonderful experience. You describe symptoms and difficulties with speaking out that resonate with me. After the workshop I was thrilled to find space in my voice box, seriously!! I feel that I gained a space, which somehow translates as a moment in which to think clearly and feel confident before vocalizing my thought. I would highly recommend the workshop to any level of yoga student who has a desire to empower their thoughts and speech. Best thing of all though was that benefit arose while having musical FUN. ~Virginia

  • I LOVE yoga because

This was a week where we celebrated the heart by collecting donations for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario (thank you to everyone who donated!!!) and voiced why we LOVE yoga. The results filled the wall of our studio and allowed us to look into the many, many reasons why we practice yoga. The words were inspiring, funny, and comforting. Have a look.     This is how yoga has captivated these hearts… I LOVE yoga because it challenges me mentally and physically. I LOVE yoga because it increases your flexibility and improves your performance in sports. I LOVE …
