This class will provide an introduction to mindfulness meditation. Designed for those who are interested in learning more about mindfulness but are not yet ready or able to commit to a longer; 2-3 hour, 8-12 week program. Sessions will include experiential practice, inquiry and didactic instruction modelled on the traditional Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy programs. Within the sessions you will be introduced to the possibility of a different way of being. With focused attention and mindful awareness there is the potential for greater calm, a more skilful response to stress and improved wellbeing. Instruction for home practice between sessions will be provided. Evidence suggests that the greatest learning comes to those participants willing/able to include home based practice. Seekers and Skeptics welcome.
Alison Kelford,MD., MHSc, CCFP,FCFP
Alison is a family physician with more than 20 years in community practice. She has experience in helping people manage a wide range of mental health and stress based illness in a primary care setting. Alison has completed the Advanced Teacher Training in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy through the Centre for Mindfulness Studies in Toronto. She is a certified facilitator of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for Cancer, and in Mindful Practice, for health care professionals. She is also trained in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction with Jon Kabat-Zinn, and in Mind-Body Medicine with Herbert Benson, Harvard University.
Alison is on faculty at the Centre for Mindfulness Studies where she regularly facilitates MBCT groups. She also facilitates groups at Wellspring Cancer Support in Oakville and in Toronto.
