Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction – Teens

with Jennifer Brighton MSW, RSW, MPEC, PhD (cand.)

Adolescence can be a difficult time for teens for a vast array of reasons; yet there is often a commonality in the challenges they face that may be viewed through the lens of mindfulness.  Teens can have difficulties in some key areas:  perceptions and appraisals of stress, emotion regulation, meta cognitions, feeling of being out of or lacking control, attachment or pushing away pain and suffering and attention and focus.

The MBSRT program has the potential to shift and improve these areas in a teens life and as a natural outcome improve one’s quality of living.

“You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.”

This program thoroughly examines stress, the foundations of Mindfulness, present moment awareness, self care, resilience, the mind-body connection, brain neuroscience as it relates to emotions and coping, coping strategies (e.g. letting go, forgiveness patience), deep breathing/breath awareness, emotions and how they are experienced as waves, non-judgement and so much more.

We approach this learning through direct experience with body scans, guided meditations, direct teaching, curiosity with unpleasant and pleasant thoughts and group discussion.
