Ways To Lighten The Grey Days

We are in the depths of winter, and it seems not only are the days short, but they are constantly murky and grey. It's a confusing winter, one week cold and blustery, another week mild, grey and drizzly. The crisp, cold, white snow and blue skies have been missing, and I have been missing the sun. Enduring the cold becomes more manageable when there's sunshine, but this winter seems exceptionally long and challenging with its perpetual grey skies.

Here are a few ways I have found to help handle a murky, grey winter:

  • Make an effort to be outdoors when you can witness the transitions of both dusk and dawn. Being present as night turns to day and day turns to night is a wonderful way to connect with your circadian rhythm—and is a simple yet powerful meditative practice.

  • Spend time outside every day despite the weather. Go for walks and enjoy the thin light that is being offered. At the very least, sip your morning tea or coffee bathed in the soft glow of the window light.

  • Rearrange your home to capture as much natural light as possible by opening shades wide and moving your favourite chairs and tables closer to windows. Simultaneously, create cozy corners with the romantic glow of candlelight—there's something healing about a flickering flame, reminiscent of the sun.

  • Bring colour into your home. Treat yourself to bright flowers each week. Consider switching out pillows and throw blankets for brighter hues to lift your mood. Celebrate the promise of the earth's awakening.

  • Moonlight is light too. When it makes an appearance, welcome the moonlight as warmly as you would sunlight.

  • Talk to your healthcare provider about supplemental light (I have this one) and vitamin D requirements. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a real thing; investing in your health with available tools is important.

  • Embrace the uniqueness of the season by diving into winter-appropriate activities. Get lost in a good book (I highly recommend "Wintering: The Power Of Rest And Retreat In Difficult Times"), deepen your journaling practice, join a movement class in-person or online, or pick up a new skill. Stay connected to others through activities that bring you joy.

Remember, each season is a beautiful expression of the Earth, and there's beauty in them all. It's okay if this season is proving a bit challenging; be kind to yourself. Rest assured, spring will come, and a fresh start will unfold. Be present in the moment because the rest will follow in due time.
