How To Build A Home Practice Habit

Building a new habit requires significant effort, but the challenge is not only achievable but sometimes it’s necessary.  Initiating a new habit presents a dual challenge: not only are we integrating a fresh set of behaviours, but we are also detaching from previously ingrained patterns. Essentially, this process entails rewiring our brains!

When building a yoga practice, there will be days when your yoga routine wants to take a backseat to a busy to-do list. The consistency of a wellness practice occasionally falters in our busy world. However, recognizing the ability to modify or alter your practice is important to maintain consistency.  A practice should not be all or nothing.  Give yourself space for variety, spontaneity and flexibility.  Flexibility will be what transforms a practice from a mere physical practice to a spiritual and mental wellness journey.  In its various forms, practice will grant you the strength and resilience to navigate life's complexities.

For those seeking to cultivate a yoga habit, consider these helpful tips:

1. Journal or Clarify Your Intention

Take a moment to be still and clear about your motivation for this practice. Define your “why”.  Create a mantra that empowers or reminds you of your purpose. Examples include:

  • “I deserve this”

  • “This is important to me”

  • “Do it anyways.”

  • “Be Where Your Feet Are”

2. Schedule Your Practice

This is crucial for consistency. At the beginning of each week or month, schedule your classes and private practices as you would work or appointments. By committing and paying for your classes in advance, you become accountable to yourself, your teacher, and your practice community.

3. Create Visual Cues & Join A Community

Especially important for a home practice, designate a space for your yoga mat. Use a basket for props that work for your decor. Join a community where you'll be missed and appreciated.  Slowly allow space for your practice to be an integral part of your lifestyle.

4. Know Your Excuses

Expect your mind to conjure excuses for skipping a practice. Outsmart that inner voice, reminding yourself that you're rewiring your brain. Excuses are bound to happen.  It’s normal.  Respond to your excuses with your chosen mantra, such as:

  • Excuse: "I don’t have time for classes this week"

  • Mantra: “I deserve this…I can create space for one class”

5. Reflect On The Rewards

Always take the time to reflect on the rewards of your practice. Celebrate how your body moves and supports you daily. Notice the positive impact on your body and mind after each session. Cultivate a habit of reflecting on these rewards to counteract old patterns of excuse-making.   And then return to your practice the next day.  ;)
